G C Lichtenberg: “It is as if our languages were confounded: when we want a thought, they bring us a word; when we ask for a word, they give us a dash; and when we expect a dash, there comes a piece of bawdy.”

C. P. Cavafy: "I’d rather look at things than speak about them."

Martin Amis: “Gogol is funny, Tolstoy in his merciless clarity is funny, and Dostoyevsky, funnily enough, is very funny indeed; moreover, the final generation of Russian literature, before it was destroyed by Lenin and Stalin, remained emphatically comic — Bunin, Bely, Bulgakov, Zamyatin. The novel is comic because life is comic (until the inevitable tragedy of the fifth act);...”

Kenneth Goldsmith: "In 1969 the conceptual artist Douglas Huebler wrote, “The world is full of objects, more or less interesting; I do not wish to add any more.”1 I’ve come to embrace Huebler’s ideas, though it might be retooled as “The world is full of texts, more or less interesting; I do not wish to add any more.” It seems an appropriate response to a new condition in writing today: faced with an unprecedented amount of available text, the problem is not needing to write more of it; instead, we must learn to negotiate the vast quantity that exists. How I make my way through this thicket of information—how I manage it, how I parse it, how I organize and distribute it—is what distinguishes my writing from yours."

Tom Wolfe: "The first line of the doctors’ Hippocratic oath is ‘First, do no harm.’ And I think for the writers it would be: ‘First, entertain.’"

Wonder Woman and R D Karve Redux

D. Karve and Wonder Woman" या नावाचा लेख 'ऐसी अक्षरे' च्या 'पॉर्न ओके प्लीज!"

"... (Director Patty) Jenkins sets her “Wonder Woman” in the First World War instead of the Second, and, in a way, this makes a certain chronological sense, since the Marston family’s models were the formidable women who fought for suffrage, equal rights, and birth control in the nineteen-teens and twenties. In 1911, when Marston was a Harvard freshman, he saw the British suffragist Emmeline Pankhurst address a crowd in Harvard Square, after she was banned from speaking in Harvard Yard, where women were not allowed to speak. In 1912, Elizabeth Holloway was a sophomore at Mount Holyoke when students paraded for suffrage, wearing buttons that read “Votes for Women!” H. G. Peter, the artist Marston hired to draw Wonder Woman, drew pro-suffrage cartoons for magazines. Marston took Wonder Woman’s origin story straight out of Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s 1915 feminist utopia, “Herland.” In 1916, Olive Byrne’s mother, Ethel Byrne, and her aunt, Margaret Sanger, opened the first birth-control clinic in the United States; they are the founders of Planned Parenthood. In 1917, Marston was in Washington, D.C., when suffragists held a vigil outside the White House, carrying signs that read, “Mr. President, How Long Must We Wait for Liberty?”..."

"... The new “Wonder Woman” is set in an extravagantly staged and costumed 1918, driven by an uninteresting plot about the Kaiser and chemical weapons; the film renders invisible—erases—the fights women waged a century ago for representation, contraception, and equality. The real women who fought them called themselves Amazons, figures from myth, because, not knowing much about the history of women, they had to imagine ancestors. Wonder Woman is their daughter. They made her out of clay. She owes them a debt that this movie does not pay."

Not Long Ago, Marathi was Mumbai's Lingua Franca

Dinanath Dalal's Kodak Moment

Today May 30 2017 is 101st birth anniversary of Dinanath Dalal (दीनानाथ दलाल) 1916-1971

Both pictures below are from 1949.

Most of Dalal's pictures from that period are very tradition-bound. But this picture is different.

Look at the attire of the kids- especially that of a girl in both the pictures below- and, although the attractive lady is wearing conventional sari with a matching blouse, look at her trendy purse and umbrella.

I did not see such things being used by a middle class Marathi speaking family, that is taking a break on the beach, until at least 1980's. Also note the absence of a male figure. Such pictures one sees from abroad almost always have a male figure.

Tomorrow May 29 2017 is  birth centenary of John F. Kennedy

Gore Vidal: “The Kennedys were an eighteenth-century amoral couple, together for convenience…..Even now the photogenic charm of the couple at the center of so much corruption and incompetence still casts its spell."

Ramachandra Guha , ‘India After Gandhi: The History of the World's Largest Democracy‘, 2007:

“...In response to the Indian request, President Kennedy sanctioned the supply of a million rounds for machine guns, 40,000 land mines and 100,000 mortar rounds. This fell far short of the Grand Alliance that his ambassador was recommending; yet it was far in excess of what other Americans thought New Delhi deserved. A bitter opponent of arms supply to India was Senator Richard B. Russell of Georgia, the long-serving chairman of the Senate Armed Forces Committee. A crusty old reactionary – doughtily opposed to desegregation and the like – Russell had previously termed India an ‘unreliable friend’ and called Nehru a ‘demagogue and a hypocrite’. Now he told the Associated Press that he was ‘against giving India any of our modern weapons for the principal reason that we would be just giving them to the Chinese Communists’. The Indians, said the senator, had ‘put on a disgraceful exhibition in permitting themselves to be driven out of what should have been impregnable strongholds in the border mountains. They seem incapable of fighting and if we supply them with weapons they will just fall into the hands of the Communists’. While he was at present opposed to giving ‘one dime of weapons to India’, Russell said he might have a rethink if India’s old rulers, the British, were prepared to ‘take over the matter of re-organizing and re-training their militaryforces’...”

James 'Lesbian' Bond

जुलै २५ २०१६ रोजी दी गार्डियन मध्ये लेख होता: "....it's time for a lesbian Bond."...

Grief-berg Hits C V Joshi, R K Narayan, Mark Twain

इंद्रिय-द्वारां जगाचे;

नारायण त्यांच्या, जवळ जवळ संपूर्ण आत्मचरित्रात्मक, 'दी इंग्लिश टीचर', १९४५ मध्ये त्या मृत्यबद्दल म्हणतात: “There are no more surprises and shocks in life, so that I watch the flame without agitation. For me the greatest reality is this and nothing else…Nothing else will worry or interest me in life hereafter.”

courtesy: current copyrightholders to the images

“…I lost Susy thirteen years ago; I lost her mother—her incomparable mother!—five and a half years ago; Clara has gone away to live in Europe; and now I have lost Jean. How poor I am, who was once so rich! Seven months ago Mr. Roger died—one of the best friends I ever had, and the nearest perfect, as man and gentleman, I have yet met among my race; within the last six weeks Gilder has passed away, and Laffan—old, old friends of mine. Jean lies yonder, I sit here; we are strangers under our own roof; we kissed hands good-by at this door last night—and it was forever, we never suspecting it. She lies there, and I sit here—writing, busying myself, to keep my heart from breaking. How dazzlingly the sunshine is flooding the hills around! It is like a mockery.
Seventy-four years ago twenty-four days ago. Seventy-four years old yesterday. Who can estimate my age today?
I have looked upon her again. I wonder I can bear it. She looks just as her mother looked when she lay dead in that Florentine villa so long ago. The sweet placidity of death! it is more beautiful than sleep….” ("Jean is dead!', 1909)

Susy, Clara, Jean-

Karl Marx Will Soon be 200

Today May 6 2017 is the beginning of 200th birth anniversary year of Karl Marx (1818-1883).

John Gray:
"What Marx said about communism is wrong and dangerous. His analysis of capitalism, however, is on many points up-to-date. Marx recognized the revolutionary power of capitalist economies – they create wealth, richness, innovation. But they also create uncertainty, and they tend to destroy the middle class."

Peter Watson:
“...Nationalism was catastrophic in many  ways, but it also had its positive side. This was nowhere more evident than in regard to the  great flowering of German intellectual life in the nineteenth century which, whether or not it was caused by unification of the country, and by the great feeling of nationalism that accompanied the unification, certainly occurred at exactly the same time.  Sigmund Freud, Max Planck, Ernst Mach, Hermann Helmholtz, Marx, Weber, Nietzsche, Ibsen, Strindberg, von Hofmannsthal, Rudolf Clausius, Wilhelm Rontgen, Eduard  von Hartmann, . . . all these were German or German-speaking...”

The following brilliant poem by Sadanand Rege (सदानंद रेगे) sums up what happened to Marx and Marxism eventually...
