I did not know the existence of Chandu the Magician.
It is an American supernatural radio drama which originally aired from 1931 to 1936. A revival on a different network took place 12 years later, airing from 1948 to 1950.
Gayne Whitman played the lead role of American-born Frank Chandler (Chandu), who had learned occult secrets from a yogi in India. Known as Chandu, he possessed several supernatural skills, including astral projection, teleportation and the ability to create illusions. Chandu's goal was to "go forth with his youth and strength to conquer the evil that threatens mankind"
Facebook page 'Comic Book Historians' says on September 7 2024 : "As Stan Lee himself admitted, Doctor Strange was Steve Ditko's idea. A few issues after his 1963 premiere, Doctor Strange's origin by both Lee and Ditko, was published. Lee claims the origin was influenced by Chandu the Magician, a radio serial that became a film in 1932. In this film, Westerner Frank Chandler travels to India to train under an ancient yogi and becomes the sorcerer Chandu. He combats the evil mastermind Roxor, portrayed by Bela Lugosi. Chandu’s powers of astral projection, mentalism, and teleportation through hand gestures are especially fun to watch."
