G C Lichtenberg: “It is as if our languages were confounded: when we want a thought, they bring us a word; when we ask for a word, they give us a dash; and when we expect a dash, there comes a piece of bawdy.”

C. P. Cavafy: "I’d rather look at things than speak about them."

Martin Amis: “Gogol is funny, Tolstoy in his merciless clarity is funny, and Dostoyevsky, funnily enough, is very funny indeed; moreover, the final generation of Russian literature, before it was destroyed by Lenin and Stalin, remained emphatically comic — Bunin, Bely, Bulgakov, Zamyatin. The novel is comic because life is comic (until the inevitable tragedy of the fifth act);...”

Kenneth Goldsmith: "In 1969 the conceptual artist Douglas Huebler wrote, “The world is full of objects, more or less interesting; I do not wish to add any more.”1 I’ve come to embrace Huebler’s ideas, though it might be retooled as “The world is full of texts, more or less interesting; I do not wish to add any more.” It seems an appropriate response to a new condition in writing today: faced with an unprecedented amount of available text, the problem is not needing to write more of it; instead, we must learn to negotiate the vast quantity that exists. How I make my way through this thicket of information—how I manage it, how I parse it, how I organize and distribute it—is what distinguishes my writing from yours."

Tom Wolfe: "The first line of the doctors’ Hippocratic oath is ‘First, do no harm.’ And I think for the writers it would be: ‘First, entertain.’"

Stoically Playful Banter In Tukaram, Ionesco, Beckett and The Wire

Samuel Beckett, 'Waiting for Godot', 1948-1953 :

"...POZZO: ( peremptory) . Who is Godot?

ESTRAGON: Godot?

POZZO: You took me for Godot.

VLADIMIR: Oh no, Sir, not for an instant, Sir.

POZZO: Who is he?

VLADIMIR:  Oh he's a . . . he's a kind of acquaintance.

ESTRAGON: Nothing of the kind, we hardly know him.

VLADIMIR: True . . . we don't know him very well . . . but all the same . . .

ESTRAGON: Personally, I wouldn't even know him if I saw him.

POZZO: You took me for him.

ESTRAGON: ( recoiling before Pozzo) . That's to say . . . you understand . . . the dusk . . . the strain . . . waiting . . . I confess . . . I imagined . . . for a second . . .

POZZO: Waiting? So you were waiting for him?..."

"... Anyway, since I got you up in here acting like my bitch and shit with all your guilty-ass crying and whatnot maybe you can do something for me...."

वरील वाक्यातील हा भाग पहा : ...since I got you up in here acting like my bitch and shit with all your guilty-ass crying and whatnot ...

"... From one point of view, The Wire is an exercise in realism. The reality it depicts is violent and profane. In “Old Cases,” an episode in the first series, McNulty and a colleague visit the site of the murder of a black college student. For nearly five minutes, while examining the crime scene and looking at photographs of the dead woman, the two detectives communicate with one another using only the word “fuck” and variations on it. The scene may have been a response by Simon and his co-writer to those who objected to the liberal use of expletives in the series: this is how detectives talk, the writers were saying. Repeating “fuck” while looking at photographs of the murdered woman testifies to the loss of affect that comes from too much contact with death and violence. The detectives are hard-pressed professionals, who are able to do the job only on condition that their normal human responses are in some degree suspended. Falling back on the profanity testifies to the difficulty of articulating any response to a situation in which random murder has become a normal part of life. At another level the repeated use of “fuck” and its derivatives composes a litany to meaninglessness, a succession of expletives that is as devoid of sense as the deaths that are being investigated. At this point the series plumbs deeper than Greek tragedy to approach the crueller genre of absurdist comedy. If the exchange between the detectives has dramatic precedents, it is in the stoically playful banter that is rehearsed in the plays of Ionesco and Beckett...."

ग्रे ज्याबद्दल बोलतात त्या एपिसोडच्या- In “Old Cases,” an episode in the first series- ट्रान्सक्रिप्टचा  भाग वाचा:

“...
Fuck.

Motherfucker.

Fucking fuck.

Fuck.
Fuck.
What the fuck? Fuck.
Fuck.
-No.
-Fuck.
Fuck it.
Fuck.
Motherfuck.
Fuck.
Fuckity, fuck, fuck.
Fuck.
Fuck.
Motherfucker.
Fuckin' A.
Fuck.
Check this.
Motherfucker.
Fuck me....”

Mumtaz@70....Versatile Or Not, Still My Darling

#MumtazAt70
Mumtaz turns 70 today, July 31 2017

Sony Max was running a contest to "Pick Your Favourite Versatile Actress" in March 2017.

The contestants were Jaya Bachchan, Mumtaz, Sharmila Tagore, Rakhee, Hema Malini.

I ignored the word versatile and voted for Mumtaz. For me, it was a no-brainer.

I have liked her in many films, even where she was supposedly playing second fiddle such as Brahmachari, 1968. There I wish she played the role of almost lifeless Rajshree!

She was really outstanding in films such as Pyar Kiye Ja, Ram Aur Shyam, Do Raaste, Sachaa Jhutha, Dushman, Tere Mere Sapne, Hare Rama Hare Krishna, Lofar, Chor Machaye Shor. Indeed in many of those films, she did better than her leading male costar.

Some her endearing qualities as a great entertainer are demonstrated in many Hindi films songs that are picturised on her, one of them being 'Kanchi Re Kanchi'.

Following is a moment where she is shooing away kids by gesticulating rather absentmindedly as her mind is really focused what Prashant Jaiswal (Dev Anand) is singing outside. For me,  it captures the best, albeit occasionally,  that Indian cinema offers me- dreaminess, melody, tenderness, beauty...

Journey of Air India Since Jan 1958

Hindustan Times, June 8 2017
“Govt should have exited debt- laden Air India 15 years back: (Arun) Jaitley on privatisation: Air India has piled over Rs 50,000 crore of debt mainly because of high maintenance cost and lease rent. It barely made any operational profit in last decade except in FY16.”

Manavi Kapur, Business Standard, June 23 2017:
“...Though the international airport at New Delhi is always bustling with passengers, early mornings are a particularly busy time. Amid the frenzied activity is a slow-moving row of check-in desks that belong to Air India. A member of the prestigious Star Alliance, India’s national carrier also has the distinction of having one of the poorest and most outdated customer experiences.... The erstwhile Tata Airlines and brainchild of JRD Tata, Air India was nationalised by then prime minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, in 1953. These were its glory days, with a monopoly in the aviation industry and a fledgling customer base that was only just beginning to fly. While a seller’s market ensured it made money, a political milieu of trade and labour unions dictated much of its work culture....”
