G C Lichtenberg: “It is as if our languages were confounded: when we want a thought, they bring us a word; when we ask for a word, they give us a dash; and when we expect a dash, there comes a piece of bawdy.”

C. P. Cavafy: "I’d rather look at things than speak about them."

Martin Amis: “Gogol is funny, Tolstoy in his merciless clarity is funny, and Dostoyevsky, funnily enough, is very funny indeed; moreover, the final generation of Russian literature, before it was destroyed by Lenin and Stalin, remained emphatically comic — Bunin, Bely, Bulgakov, Zamyatin. The novel is comic because life is comic (until the inevitable tragedy of the fifth act);...”

Kenneth Goldsmith: "In 1969 the conceptual artist Douglas Huebler wrote, “The world is full of objects, more or less interesting; I do not wish to add any more.”1 I’ve come to embrace Huebler’s ideas, though it might be retooled as “The world is full of texts, more or less interesting; I do not wish to add any more.” It seems an appropriate response to a new condition in writing today: faced with an unprecedented amount of available text, the problem is not needing to write more of it; instead, we must learn to negotiate the vast quantity that exists. How I make my way through this thicket of information—how I manage it, how I parse it, how I organize and distribute it—is what distinguishes my writing from yours."

Tom Wolfe: "The first line of the doctors’ Hippocratic oath is ‘First, do no harm.’ And I think for the writers it would be: ‘First, entertain.’"

Augmented Reality

Orson Welles:
“What we professional liars hope to serve is truth. I’m afraid the pompous word for that is art. Picasso himself said it. Art, he said, is a lie, a lie that makes us realize the truth.” The alternative is grim. “Reality? It’s the toothbrush waiting at home for you in its glass, a bus ticket, a paycheck, and the grave.”..."

Network (1976):
“...You're beginning to believe the illusions we're spinning here, you're beginning to believe that the tube is reality and your own lives are unreal. You do. Why, whatever the tube tells you: you dress like the tube, you eat like the tube, you raise your children like the tube, you even think like the tube. This is mass madness, you maniacs. In God's name, you people are the real thing, WE are the illusion...”
“...As you move around a city, a park, or a beach, your smartphone’s camera gives you an “augmented” view of your surroundings, so you can spot the fictional creatures under a real-life tree or perched on a real-life park bench...”
('How the Pokémon Go craze went corporate')

After reading the above and witnessing my son's pursuit of the Pokémon, I realized how GA's Don could be seeing a Pokemon as he lay dying!

How does that Pokemon look?

Acribing To Nature Serenity in December 1944

Tony Robbins, 'Awaken the Giant Within':
"We are conditioned, like dogs to a whistle or unluckier dogs to a kick, to certain habits of thought and action. How, then, are we supposed to change"

A E Housman:
"For nature, heartless, witless nature,
 Will neither care nor know
What stranger's feet may find the meadow
  And trespass there and go,
Nor ask amid the dews of morning
If they are mine or no."

Artist: Unknown (to me) for Vangmay Shobha (वाङ्मय शोभा), December 1944....I could not find the name of the artist in the issue.

When I first saw this picture, part of which was exposed in previous post, for a second, I thought she was taking a selfie!

Just soak in the serenity portrayed in the image and the words just below the image:  "What Will Happen to Hitler?" (हिटलरचें काय होणार?)....the words that conveyed the violence, the chaos, the suffering  that were reigning the world then...

James Parker:
“….“And if nature asks us to treat it with humor?” enquired Czeslaw Milosz, introducing a poem by Robert Francis in the anthology A Book of Luminous Things:
If Winnie the Pooh, Piglet, and Rabbit, and his friends-and-relations, if all that humanization is precisely what nature expects from us? In other words, perhaps we are unable to say—to tell her—anything, except ascribing to her sadness, smiles, ominousness, serenity?
What a canny poet Milosz was. Nature unobserved, unsentimentalized, unpolluted with our delusions, is just a bunch of stuff eating itself. Here endeth the lesson of Animal Planet: it’s all about the human. Oh, Homo sapiens. Oh, blessed biped. Oh, you…”

Courtesy Homo sapiens. Oh, blessed biped...in 1944, nature was  a bunch of stuff eating itself more than ever!
