G C Lichtenberg: “It is as if our languages were confounded: when we want a thought, they bring us a word; when we ask for a word, they give us a dash; and when we expect a dash, there comes a piece of bawdy.”

C. P. Cavafy: "I’d rather look at things than speak about them."

Martin Amis: “Gogol is funny, Tolstoy in his merciless clarity is funny, and Dostoyevsky, funnily enough, is very funny indeed; moreover, the final generation of Russian literature, before it was destroyed by Lenin and Stalin, remained emphatically comic — Bunin, Bely, Bulgakov, Zamyatin. The novel is comic because life is comic (until the inevitable tragedy of the fifth act);...”

Kenneth Goldsmith: "In 1969 the conceptual artist Douglas Huebler wrote, “The world is full of objects, more or less interesting; I do not wish to add any more.”1 I’ve come to embrace Huebler’s ideas, though it might be retooled as “The world is full of texts, more or less interesting; I do not wish to add any more.” It seems an appropriate response to a new condition in writing today: faced with an unprecedented amount of available text, the problem is not needing to write more of it; instead, we must learn to negotiate the vast quantity that exists. How I make my way through this thicket of information—how I manage it, how I parse it, how I organize and distribute it—is what distinguishes my writing from yours."

Tom Wolfe: "The first line of the doctors’ Hippocratic oath is ‘First, do no harm.’ And I think for the writers it would be: ‘First, entertain.’"

A Special Prayer for the Supreme Court.....

“Four of India's most senior Supreme Court judges have warned that democracy is under threat because of the way the court is being run.

In the first ever news conference by sitting judges at India's top court, they said Chief Justice Dipak Misra was ignoring rules and assigning cases according to his own preferences.

Chief Justice Misra has not responded.

The event has prompted Prime Minister Narendra Modi to hold an emergency meeting with his law minister....”

“Judges have been making news for centuries, for good, bad, right and wrong reasons. They wield enormous power because they decide what is ok and what is not in what governments do. In that sense they are the real bosses of any country...
.... The Indian Supreme Court became “lions under the throne” when Jawaharlal Nehru brought in the fourth amendment in 1955 to show the judiciary its place as far as ruling on property rights is concerned. (Just imagine what would happen if the Bharatiya Janata Party or BJP tried anything like it).
In 1971, the Supreme Court re-asserted itself. It told Indira Gandhi to be a good girl and not be a nuisance to Indian democracy. She not only refused but also struck back by appointing loyalist judges.
There was even talk of a “committed judiciary”. Again imagine what would happen if the BJP tried anything like it...”

Joseph Lelyveld, 'Great Soul: Mahatma Gandhi and His Struggle With India', 2011:
"...His (Mahatma Gandhi’s) answers to conspicuous issues of rural mass poverty, underemployment, and chronic indebtedness may have been incomplete and untested. Not only did he reject birth control and recommend abstinence as a means of limiting population, but he had no scheme that addressed glaring inequities in land ownership and distribution beyond a wishful, woolly theory of “trusteeship” that basically relied on the benevolence of the wealthy..."

त्यांचे 'India After Gandhi: The History of the World's Largest Democracy', २००७ पुस्तक गाजलेले, मराठीत अनुवाद झालेले. त्यातील 'Autumn of the Matriarch' ह्या प्रकरणात खालील माहिती आहे:

"...The debates on India’s population size dated from the earliest days of Independence. Social workers had set up a Family Planning Association of India in 1949. The Planning Commission had spoken of the importance of family planning since its inception in 1950–1. However, culture and economics worked in favour of large families. The biases in educational development meant that girls were still valued more as child-bearers than as wage-earners. The continuing dependence on agriculture placed a premium on children. Indian Muslims and Catholics were enjoined by their clergy to abjure family planning...."

२> अतिडाव्या विचारसरणीच्या  'Economic and Political Weekly' च्या नोव्हेंबर २०१७मधील एका अंकात आलेल्या लेखाचे नाव आहे : 'Garibi Hatao or Garib Hatao?: India's Journey through FamilyPlanning and Poverty 'Removal''.

Vasudev Shastri Khare and Padmavati

Why NOT Work On Being a Better Fish: Pravasi Bharatiya Divas

Today January 9 2018 is Pravasi Bharatiya Divas

Stephen Jay Gould:

"We are here because one odd group of fishes had a peculiar fin anatomy that could transform into legs for terrestrial creatures; because the earth never froze entirely during an ice age; because a small and tenuous species, arising in Africa a quarter of a million years ago, has managed, so far, to survive by hook and by crook."

To Be a Man and Mortal...

Today January 3 2018 is my mother's 12th death anniversary

Priam the king of Troy:

"Only we humans can know, endowed as we are with mortality, but also with consciousness, what it is to be aware each day of the fading in us of freshness and youth; the falling away, as the muscles grow slack in our arms, the thigh grows hollow and the sight dims, of whatever manly vigor we were once endowed with. Well, all that happens. It is what it means to be a man and mortal."

त्या उत्कृष्टपणे चितारलेल्या माशीबद्दल असं म्हटल जात: "The superbly detailed black fly that crawls across this woman’s white headdress is both a proof of the unknown German artist’s skill and a sinister suggestion of mortality and decay."

on the right, my mother c1957

Memorials on Facebook-II
