G C Lichtenberg: “It is as if our languages were confounded: when we want a thought, they bring us a word; when we ask for a word, they give us a dash; and when we expect a dash, there comes a piece of bawdy.”

C. P. Cavafy: "I’d rather look at things than speak about them."

Martin Amis: “Gogol is funny, Tolstoy in his merciless clarity is funny, and Dostoyevsky, funnily enough, is very funny indeed; moreover, the final generation of Russian literature, before it was destroyed by Lenin and Stalin, remained emphatically comic — Bunin, Bely, Bulgakov, Zamyatin. The novel is comic because life is comic (until the inevitable tragedy of the fifth act);...”

Kenneth Goldsmith: "In 1969 the conceptual artist Douglas Huebler wrote, “The world is full of objects, more or less interesting; I do not wish to add any more.”1 I’ve come to embrace Huebler’s ideas, though it might be retooled as “The world is full of texts, more or less interesting; I do not wish to add any more.” It seems an appropriate response to a new condition in writing today: faced with an unprecedented amount of available text, the problem is not needing to write more of it; instead, we must learn to negotiate the vast quantity that exists. How I make my way through this thicket of information—how I manage it, how I parse it, how I organize and distribute it—is what distinguishes my writing from yours."

Tom Wolfe: "The first line of the doctors’ Hippocratic oath is ‘First, do no harm.’ And I think for the writers it would be: ‘First, entertain.’"

Why Ajanta Caves Moved Nandalal Bose, Mukul Dey But Not M V Dhurandhar?

"It is impossible for me to make my reader realize my feelings when I first saw the site of, the caves. I was spell-bound. The natural splendour of the scene, its utter seclusion, the amphitheatre of bills enclosing the glen with a rugged rampart, shaped like a crescent moon, the little murmuring stream which flowed so gently through a landscape of such wild grandeur affected me deeply. As I looked more closely I perceived that out of the stone, which was of a glorious tinge of bluish mauve, had been hewn richly carved arches and columns, and that these formed the entrance to a series of cave-temples surpassing all that I had imagined. My companion and I  remained for long in silent ecstasy. I felt completely satisfied. Just this one vision repaid the trouble of my journey a thousandfold...

I was stunned but extremely happy when I first saw the paintings, for I felt that they had been done with the utmost care, and yet, I thought hereafter I would be able to cover similarly large pieces of walls by myself, in the same way. I actually fell in love with many; in fact with all of the paintings on the walls, especially some of the beautiful paintings of the most lovely women..."

Deep Seek says on Jan 29 2025:

Oh what have you done to Johan Christian Dahl's Dresden?

Oh bountiful Gods of the air! Oh Science and Progress!

You great big wonderful world! Oh what have you done?

Wikipedia:

The bombing of Dresden was a joint British and American aerial bombing attack on the city of Dresden, the capital of the German state of Saxony, during World War II. In four raids between 13 and 15 February 1945, 772 heavy bombers of the Royal Air Force (RAF) and 527 of the United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) dropped more than 3,900 tons[vague] of high-explosive bombs and incendiary devices on the city. The bombing and the resulting firestorm destroyed more than 1,600 acres (6.5 km2) of the city centre. Up to 25,000 people were killed

Aundh State Stood Out Before 1947

John Zubrzycki, 'Dethroned: Patel, Menon and the Integration of Princely India',  2023:

"...The motivations of the main players in this endgame of empire differed greatly. For Congress leaders, the princely states were bastions of despotism, debauchery and decay. Nehru derided them as ‘sinks of reaction and incompetence and unrestrained autocratic power, sometimes exercised by vicious and degraded individuals’.  Corfield and others who had served in them, including many Indian dewans, ministers and administrators, took a more nuanced view. Yes, there were tyrants who should have been deposed had it not been for their usefulness to the British, but there were also many states such as Mysore, Baroda and Aundh where indigenous rule was benevolent, devoid of communal friction, based on a stable social structure and carried out in an atmosphere of security and loyalty. Given time, it would be possible for the princes to put their houses in order. While Nehru was making no secret of his abhorrence of feudal autocracy, the father of Hindutva, Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, saw the states as representing the true India, ‘portals to a pure, ancient past’, and even as ‘the foundation on which the future nation’ could be launched. As for the princes, all but the most myopic had some inkling that the tide of history was turning against them, that the prospect of dozens of ‘mini Ulsters’ made up of larger states exercising their right to independence and of small states creating their own federations would never be tolerated by the leaders of a newly independent dominion of India or Pakistan..."
