G C Lichtenberg: “It is as if our languages were confounded: when we want a thought, they bring us a word; when we ask for a word, they give us a dash; and when we expect a dash, there comes a piece of bawdy.”

C. P. Cavafy: "I’d rather look at things than speak about them."

Martin Amis: “Gogol is funny, Tolstoy in his merciless clarity is funny, and Dostoyevsky, funnily enough, is very funny indeed; moreover, the final generation of Russian literature, before it was destroyed by Lenin and Stalin, remained emphatically comic — Bunin, Bely, Bulgakov, Zamyatin. The novel is comic because life is comic (until the inevitable tragedy of the fifth act);...”

Kenneth Goldsmith: "In 1969 the conceptual artist Douglas Huebler wrote, “The world is full of objects, more or less interesting; I do not wish to add any more.”1 I’ve come to embrace Huebler’s ideas, though it might be retooled as “The world is full of texts, more or less interesting; I do not wish to add any more.” It seems an appropriate response to a new condition in writing today: faced with an unprecedented amount of available text, the problem is not needing to write more of it; instead, we must learn to negotiate the vast quantity that exists. How I make my way through this thicket of information—how I manage it, how I parse it, how I organize and distribute it—is what distinguishes my writing from yours."

Mastani, Maharashtrian Mona Lisa!

The Lady with a Fan, ca. 1638—1639

Artist: Diego Velázquez (1599 - 1660)

Jonathan Jones writes about the picture in The Guardian, Jan 2019:

"Who is the mysterious lady with a fan? She seems to deliberately create enigma and ambiguity. Wearing traditional Spanish dress, she gazes out of the painting as if at someone she knows. Her black headdress and shawl and white gloves set off a face that is acutely real, mottled with complex emotion. Velázquez uses the two sides of his painterly genius – his unrivalled sensual understanding of colour and texture, and capacity for rough, almost lumpen naturalism – to create a truly magical effect. She is ordinary yet glamorous, and has an elusive, paradoxical beauty. No wonder the theories about her identity range from her having been Velázquez’s wife, to a courtesan, to an exiled French aristocrat. She will always keep her secrets, because the artist planned it that way. She is the Spanish Mona Lisa."

चित्र मला  अत्यंत आवडले आहे, त्यातील lumpen naturalism आणि unrivalled sensual understanding of colour and texture....

FUGGEDABOUTIT!...Can't....Poe@210

Today January 19 2019 is 210th birth anniversary of  Edgar Allan Poe

Smithsonian Magazine, January 2019:"....The stories and poems scribbled by the half-mad Romantic have shaped our national obsession with tales of chaos and darkness. Says Kirsten Mollegaard, an English professor at the University of Hawaii at Hilo who has examined Poe’s fame: “No other American writer has had as enduring and pervasive an influence on popular culture.”...."

Natyachhatakar Diwakar@130

140 Years of Manet's Chez le père Lathuille

Artist: Edouard Manet, 1879

courtesy: Wikipedia

Michael Kimmelman, The New York Times, May 2011:
“...It helped that Manet painted like an angel and had a wicked sense of humor. I am indebted to Richard Dorment, the art critic of The Daily Telegraph of London, for dissecting so neatly the wry intricacies of “Chez le Père Lathuille,” which shows a mustachioed gigolo wooing a dowager on the terrace of an outdoor restaurant, his arm around her chair, his face pressed toward hers like a child’s into a candy shop window. She recoils, slightly, distractedly touching her plate, her eyes downcast, lips tight in embarrassment but ready to succumb. Ruthless and clinically spot-on, Manet’s picture even captures the hangdog eyes of the knowing waiter in the background, pausing discreetly until his clients’ transaction is completed....”

I wrote about this  picture on January 30 2012:
"I haven't seen more beautiful and funnier picture together than this all my life.

Look at the man, his both hands, middle-finger of his left, his right-hand grip on the glass. Follow his eyes. Look at his bow-tie, his sideburn, his moustache...

Is he listening to the lady at all? Is he seducing her? The lady seems to be charmed. I keep wondering what he would do next...will he kiss her lightly on the lips?...

Look at the waiter. What is he looking at or waiting for?

When I see this picture, a lot of quality pictures of 20th century, including some great cartoons, don't surprise me. Manet anticipates them.

Manet has said: Conciseness in art is essential and a refinement. The concise man makes one think; the verbose bores. Always work towards conciseness.

And what else are cartoons if not conciseness?"

Rembrandt, T S Shejwalkar and G A Kulkarni

John Berger, 'Portraits: John Berger on Artists', 2015:
"... THE ESSENTIAL CHARACTER of oil painting has been obscured by an almost universal misreading of the relationship between its ‘tradition’ and its ‘masters’. Certain exceptional artists in exceptional circumstances broke free of the norms of the tradition and produced work that was diametrically opposed to its values: yet these artists are acclaimed as the tradition’s supreme representatives: a claim which is made easier by the fact that after their death, the tradition closed around their work, incorporating minor technical innovations, and continuing as though nothing of principle had been disturbed. This is why Rembrandt or Vermeer or Poussin or Chardin or Goya or Turner had no followers but only superficial imitators..... "

Sebastian Smee says : "....As with late Rembrandt, the paint is applied in ways that disrupt or interfere with the viewer’s easy access to the image. Something extra is conveyed—an awkwardness, but also a sense of deepening interest, thickening emotion, urgency...." (Prospect Magazine, 2012)

the paint is applied in ways that disrupt or interfere with the viewer’s easy access to the image. Something extra is conveyed—an awkwardness, but also a sense of deepening interest, thickening emotion, urgency...

".....It seemed to me – and it still does – a painting about leaving home.....
.... I love the painting of the Polish Rider as a child might, for it is the beginning of a story being told by an old man who has seen many things and never wants to go to bed.
I love the rider as a woman might: his nerve, his insolence, his vulnerability, the strength of his thighs. Liz is right. Many horses course through dreams here.

In 1939 units of Polish cavalry armed with swords charged against the tanks of the invading Panzer divisions. In the seventeenth century, the ‘Winged Horsemen’ were feared as the avenging angels of the eastern plains. Yet the horse means more than military prowess. Over the centuries Poles have been continually obliged to travel or emigrate. Across their land without natural frontiers the roads never end.

The equestrian habit is still sometimes visible in bodies and the way they move. The gesture of putting the right foot in a stirrup and hoicking the other leg over comes to my mind whilst sitting in a pizza bar in Warsaw watching men and women who have never in their lives mounted or even touched a horse, and who are drinking Pepsi-Cola.

I love the Polish Rider’s horse as a horseman who has lost his mount and has been given another might. The gift horse is a bit long in the tooth – the Poles call such a nag a szkapa – but he’s an animal whose loyalty has been proven.
Finally I love the landscape’s invitation, wherever it may lead."

आणखी एक: "It seemed to me – and it still does – a painting about leaving home"...
