यु थांट आणि शाळेतील मी ...Why U Thant Disappeared After His Death

२०२५ साली  यु थांट  यांच्या वर पुस्तक (Peacemaker by Thant Myint-U) प्रसिद्ध झाले , त्यांच्या नातवाने लिहले आणि माझ्या शाळेतील आठवणी जाग्या झाल्या .... 

थांट  हे युनो चे प्रमुख म्हणून १९६१ ते १९७१ मध्ये काम करत होते , म्हणजे माझ्या पहिली (१९६५-६६) ते सहावी पर्यंत (१९७०-७१). मी महाराष्ट्र टाइम्स त्या काळात जमेल तितका वाचत असे आणि त्यांचे नाव गंमतशीर असल्याने आणि पहिल्या पानावर येत असल्याने माझ्या चांगलेच लक्षात राहिले. 

मी माध्यमिक शिष्यवृत्तीच्या परीक्षेला १९७२ साली बसलो होतो , त्यावेळी १९७१ साली अभ्यास करताना यु थांट यांचे नाव अधून मधून यायचे. त्यांचे नाव मी लक्षात ठेवले तर आणि ते परीक्षेत विचारले तर , मला एक गुण मिळणार होता , कदाचित शिष्यवृत्ती मिळणार होती, ८वी ते १०वी पर्यंत , दरमहा १० रुपये , ती रक्कम त्यावेळी मोठी होती , शिवाय प्रतिष्ठा तर होतीच.  

माझ्या लक्षात हे आले नाही की त्यांचे नाव १९७१ नंतर इतके नाहीसे का झाले  ... त्याचे थोडे उत्तर न्यू यॉर्कर चा डिसेंबर १० २०२५ चा अंक वाचून मिळाले :

During the Cuban missile crisis, the United States and the Soviet Union came dangerously close to nuclear catastrophe; across Africa and Asia, post-colonial states plunged into bloodshed. This biography, written by Thant’s grandson, focusses on his tireless efforts to defuse the conflicts of his era—above all, America’s disastrous adventure in Vietnam. Thant’s frustrated attempts to end that war tarnished his reputation in Washington and, this book suggests, may have helped deprive him of his rightful place in history. Leading the U.N., Thant once remarked, was “the loneliest job in the world.”
