"...
Initially, she (Barbara Shermund) started out illustrating covers but
was soon contributing cartoons. From 1926 to 1944, she created almost 600 New
Yorker cartoons. Her work was perfect for the 1920s; often featuring young
flapper characters navigating the ups-and-downs of modern Manhattan life. It's
easy to view her work and imagine that it might be reflecting Shermund's own
life. She travelled frequently and often didn't have a fixed address. She
married twice yet some of her work can be read as having a queer subtext.
In the 1940s, a new art director forced her to tone
down some of the more feminist aspects of her cartoons and, in 1944, she
produced her final cartoon for the publication. She continued to work for other
magazines; becoming a mainstay at Esquire and contributing to the likes of
Collier's, Life and The Saturday Evening Post...."
