Brilliant Barbara....the 'Bad Girl' Does Win!

"...Initially, she (Barbara Shermund)  started out illustrating covers but was soon contributing cartoons. From 1926 to 1944, she created almost 600 New Yorker cartoons. Her work was perfect for the 1920s; often featuring young flapper characters navigating the ups-and-downs of modern Manhattan life. It's easy to view her work and imagine that it might be reflecting Shermund's own life. She travelled frequently and often didn't have a fixed address. She married twice yet some of her work can be read as having a queer subtext.

In the 1940s, a new art director forced her to tone down some of the more feminist aspects of her cartoons and, in 1944, she produced her final cartoon for the publication. She continued to work for other magazines; becoming a mainstay at Esquire and contributing to the likes of Collier's, Life and The Saturday Evening Post...."

कंठस्नान आणि बलिदान'.....125 Years After June 22 1897

श्री. मीना वैशंपायन संपादित "विचारसंचित", २०१५ मधील  दोन लेख वाचले.

१>'चेष्टेचा विषय व्हावा तसे रंगविलेले कथानक २२ जून १८९७" , १९८० हा चित्रपट समीक्षा लेख :

२२ जून १८९७ हा १९७९ सालचा 'गाजलेला' आणि बहुपुरस्कृत सिनेमा मी पाहिलेला नाही, आणि तो पहिला नाही याबद्दल बरे वाटले इतके या चित्रपटाचे वाभाडे दुर्गाबाईंनी काढले आहेत.

या शतकात 'पिरियड' टीव्ही आणि चित्रपटांचे मराठीत पेव फुटले आहे. त्या पार्श्व् भूमीवर प्रत्येक प्रेक्षकाने मन लावून तो लेख वाचावा आणि परीक्षण लिहणाऱ्यांनी किती अभ्यास केला पाहिजे हे समजण्यासाठी तो लेख वाचावा.

चित्रपटाचे संवाद विजय तेंडुलकरांचे आहेत आणि त्यात किती ढिसाळपणा आणि खोडकरपणा आहे त्याचे एक उदाहरण खालील एका परिच्छेदात पहा.

त्या शिवाय पुरुषांची वेशभूषा, बायकांची वेशभूषा, पुरुषांची केशभूषा, स्त्रियांची केशभूषा, पुरुषांची शरीरयष्टी, मराठी भाषा, दुर्लक्षिलेला पण अत्यंत महत्वाचा मुंबई शहराचा चापेकरांच्या आयुष्यातील रोल, कीर्तनाच्या दृशांची मांडणी, रँडच्या पुण्यातील पापांचा घडा उघडा न पाडणे हे सगळेच मोठ्या प्रमाणात ढिसाळ आणि वास्तवाला विसंगत आहे.

(दुर्गाबाईनी सत्यजित रेंचा 'घरे बाईरे', १९८४ हा पिरियड सिनेमा बघितला का हे माहित नाही पण त्यांना तो नक्की आवडला असता.)

हा लेख वाचून मला लक्षात आले की मी हे पुस्तक पूर्वीच मिळवून वाचायचा प्रयत्न करायला पाहिजे होता. एवढा अभ्यास, एवढे संशोधन १९व्या शतकांतील महाराष्ट्राच्या इतिहासासाठी (काही देशभक्त आणि काही समाजसुधारक यांच्या बाबत सोडता) क्वचितच झाले आहे. (महाराष्ट्राच्या सुदैवाने य दि फडके यांनी सुद्धा ते मोठ्या प्रमाणावर केले.) .

दुर्गाबाईंनी विष्णु श्रीधर जोशी यांचे ते पुस्तक कसे थोर आहे हे सिद्ध केलय. शेवटी त्या म्हणतात: "महाराष्ट शासनाने या ग्रंथाची इंग्रजी व भारतीय भाषांत भाषांतर करून घेणे आगत्याचे आहे."...

इतर भाषांतील भाषांतराचे मला माहित नाही पण त्याचे मराठीत भाषांतर होणे गरजेचे आहे कारण आज २०१९साली ते पुस्तक आऊट ऑफ प्रिंट आहे... बाजारात कुठेही विकत मिळत नाही!

Still in hiding, the Pandavas disguised themselves as brahmins and attended the Swayamvara of Panchala princess Draupadi. Out of all of the great kings and other Kaurava princes, only Arjuna was able to do the established challenge. The test is to lift, string, and fire Pinakin to pierce the eye of a golden fish only by looking at its reflection; Drupada had designed this test with Arjuna in mind. All Kings including Karna and Shalya failed to string the bow and got defeated in task. At last Arjuna came forward and lifted bow with just one hand and hit the target, hence he won Draupadi….”

The Peacock Censor and the Nipples

Wikipedia: La Vie Parisienne (the Parisian life) was a French weekly magazine founded in Paris in 1863 and was published without interruption until 1970. It was popular at the start of the 20th century. Originally it covered novels, sports, theater, music and the arts. In 1905 the magazine changed hands and the new editor Charles Saglio changed its format to suit the modern reader. It soon evolved into a mildly risqué erotic publication....

Georges Paul Gaston Leonnec  या फ्रेंच कलाकाराने हे चित्र काढले आहे.  १९२५ साली. त्याचे नाव  "Le Paon Censeur" ("The Peacock Censor").

Very probably the only time the nipples on this publication's cover were censored.

यातील मजा एका शब्दच्छलात लपली आहे.

Le Paon Censeur, sounds a bit like "Le Penseur" ("The Thinker"), a well known nude statue by Rodin.
