कॉमिकसच्या घराण्याचा पण वेगळा असा Graphic Novel हा genre मराठी मध्ये जवळजवळ नाहीच. 'अमर चित्र कथा'ची पुस्तक पहिल्यांदा इंग्लिश किंवा हिंदीत तयार होतात आणि नंतर मराठीत येतात. अर्थात अ.चि.क काही ठराविक गोष्टी (प्रामुख्याने पौराणिक, ऐतिहासिक, चरित्र) सांगण्यासाठीच तयार होत.
जर graphic novel हा प्रकार त्याच्या पूर्ण ताकतीसह मराठीत कोण रुळवू शकल असत असा विचार केला तर एक नाव प्रामुख्याने डोळ्यासमोर येत ते म्हणजे: भैय्यासाहेब ओंकार. (ओंकार या ब्लॉग वर पूर्वी येवून गेलेत. प्रामुख्याने इथे आणि इथे.)
नाथमाधवांचा वीरधवल, १९१३ मला आवडले भैय्यासाहेब ओंकारांमुळे, एच. जी. वेल्स यांचे 'टाईम मशीन' पहिल्यांदा वाचले त्यांच्यामुळेच.
पूर्वी लिहल्याप्रमाणे:
" I never read Virdhawal as a kid (8-10 years old) in the form of a 'words' novel but fell in love with it reading serialization of it done in the form of a graphic novel by the late Mr. Bhaiyyasaheb Omkar for a weekend edition of a Marathi daily or a weekly. (Although I still recall many of the artist's pictures vividly, I forget the name of the publication, probably Kesari केसरी ).
I never took clippings of them but I kept reading the issue for days. I also remember missing a couple of issues from the series, silently blaming my father for that and hurting badly for the miss.
I also remember his serialization of graphic novel of Marathi translation of H G Wells's 'The Time Machine'.
I remain grateful to the late artists- Pitale, Wells, and more than them, Omkar- for lighting up my childhood.
I liked Omkar's art much more than that of Amar Chitra Katha (ACK) and Chandoba (चांदोबा). For a few years, he was my most favorite artist."
भैय्यासाहेबांच्या चित्रांवर आधारित काही पुस्तके, त्यांच्या graphic novels - मला अलीकडेच मिळाली. त्यात 'वीरधवल' मात्र मिळाले नाही.
वीरधवल मधल्या नायिकेचे ललितप्रभेचे वर्णन नाथमाधव कसे करतात ते पहा:
"... गळ्यात घातलेल्या नवरत्नहाराचे किरण तिच्या विशाल वक्षःस्थली चोहोकडे पसरले होते...."
भैय्यासाहेबांनी काढलेली ललितप्रभा आज माझ्याकडे नाही.
खालील, भैय्यासाहेबांनी काढलेले, वाङ्मयशोभा एप्रिल १९५२चे मुखपृष्ठ पाहून हे सगळे आठवले. ही सुंदरी आधुनिक ललितप्रभा तर नव्हे?
