दुर्गा भागवत : "... त्याला आपल्या संस्कृतीतला अतिथीधर्म , 'पाहुणा ' ही संकल्पना फार आवडली होती . 'तिथीं' असलेला तो अतिथी , असा अनोळखी माणूस, त्यालाही तुम्ही जेवूखाऊ घालता , त्याच्या सुखसोयी बघता . हा अतिथी धर्म त्याने अंमलात आणला होता . तो जंगलात राहायचा . पण कोणी  कधी पांथस्थ त्याच्याकडे आला, तर तो कौतुकाने त्याचा पाहुणचार करायचा . हे मी वाचलं आणि त्यावर लेख लिहला होता की, मी लहान असताना थोरो माझ्याकडे आलाय, आता त्याचा पाहुणचार मी कसा करणार ? तर मी त्याला भाकरी करून वाढते, ती त्याला खूप आवडते . कारण केंव्हा तरी इंग्लंड मधून  आणलेलं शिळं झालेलं खमण घालून केलेला पाव त्याला आवडायचा नाही , असं त्यानं लिहलेलं होतं. म्हणून त्याला माझी ताजी गरम गरम भाकरी आवडली ...."

मला  समग्र थोरो वाङ्मयात 'इंग्लंड मधून  आणलेलं शिळं झालेलं खमण घालून केलेला पाव' काही सापडला नाही ( इंग्लंड नसून ते न्यूइंग्लंड असणार) पण थोरोनी ब्रेड म्हणजे भाकरी-पोळी वर खूपवेळा आणि वेगवेगळ लिहल आहे ...तीन-चार उदाहरणे:

१> “I made a study of the ancient and indispensable art of bread-making, consulting such authorities as offered, going back to the primitive days and first invention of the unleavened kind, when from the wildness of nuts and meats men first reached the mildness and refinement of this diet, and travelling gradually down in my studies through that accidental souring of the dough which, it is supposed, taught the leavening process, and through the various fermentations thereafter, till I came to “good, sweet, wholesome bread,” the staff of life.”

२> “Bread may not always nourish us; but it always does us good, it even takes stiffness out of our joints, and makes us supple and buoyant, when we knew not what ailed us, to recognize any generosity in man or Nature, to share any unmixed and heroic joy.”

३> “...or supper

I have some potatoe

And sometimes some bread

And then if it’s cold

I go right to bed....”

४> “Some men are excited by the smell of burning powder but I thought in my dream last night how much saner to be excited by the smell of new bread.”

शेवटचे चौथ्या क्रमांकाचे उदाहरण पहा...आपल्याला माहित आहे भुकेले असताना पोळीचा किंवा भाकरीचा तयार होतानाचा वास कसा वाटतो ते: ' excited by the smell of new bread'...

मला वाटतय दुर्गाबाईंना कदाचित तिसऱ्या क्रमांकाचे उदाहरण वाचून वाईट वाटले असेल: "if it’s cold/ I go right to bed"... आणि म्हणून 'ताजी गरम गरम भाकरी करून' वाढेन...म्हणजे थोरो उपाशी पोटी झोपी जाणार नाहीत!

 
दुर्गाबाईंनी  श्रीमती सुलोचना किती सुंदर भाकरी करताना दाखवलय, मधुकर पाठकांच्या 'प्रपंच' १९६१ मध्ये,  त्याबद्दल लिहल आहे...
