Artist: Daniela Jaglenka Terrazzini
This illustration depicts the dance through which Uma changes form into the hideous goddess Kalee - developing a third eye and dripping blood. I know that Daniela relished conveying the darkness and raw power of this scene. This illustration clearly shows the influence of Aubrey Beardsley, both in its exploration of female psychology and its striking deployment of line. Thankfully, this terrible transformation is only temporary, as Uma later becomes the beautiful Parvati"
Wikipedia:
"Soundarya Lahari's hundred and three shlokas (verses) eulogize the beauty, grace and munificence of Goddess Parvati / Dakshayani, consort of Shiva."
"निसर्ग-क्षीणस्य स्तनतट-भरेण क्लमजुषोनमन्मूर्ते र्नारीतिलक शनकै-स्त्रुट्यत इव ।
चिरं ते मध्यस्य त्रुटित तटिनी-तीर-तरुणा
समावस्था-स्थेम्नो भवतु कुशलं शैलतनये ॥ 79 ॥"

[("Oh daughter of the mountain,
You who is the greatest among women,
Long live your pretty hips,
Which look fragile,
Which are by nature tiny,
Which are strained by your heavy breasts,
And hence slightly bent,
And which look like the tree,
In the eroded banks of a rushing river."), translation by P. R. Ramachander

Dear Sir
ReplyDeleteIllustration is mind blowing the way it shows beautiful breasts, open shouting mouth, whirlpool like movements, and again the picture is drawn from such view as if we are looking from over head to it ,really beautiful !
Also i always wonder when our saints praise the Goddess or otherwise also use extremely open sexy words,(though celibacy is considered highest virtue)i always feel do they suppress their natural desires? does their sub conscious always revolve around sex? which may be finding way out through these lyrics. In many of the stanzas of Saundaryalahri one finds this.Of course it is very beautifully written but.
This also reminds me one funny incident once i was attending a local leader,s speech while speaking on politics suddenly out of no context he started speaking now a days so many rapes are taking place, women should take care of their dress selection etc it was some years ago no rape cases like Delhi etc were even in discussion at that time.I think it was going on in his mind.
Our great Marathi saint Eknath also written this various sexiest bharud like (sadguru may kuntin zali mazi ) and many others see here

ReplyDeleteIssues you raise are valid, intriguing and complex.
"does their sub conscious always revolve around sex?"...Who am I to answer this? Didn't great Freud spend his life time answering it?
But Marathi saint-poets have largely avoided talking about the subject because they embraced only some aspects of Krishna-bhakti...Vinoba has written wonderfully about it...
I will visit suggested sites by you.
best,
