Mushrrom Jungle in Our Miraj

मिरजेला (१९६१-१९८५) आमच्याकडे भरपूर इंग्लिश पुस्तके होती, वडील एम ए (इंग्लिश) होते आणि कॉलेज मध्ये इंग्लिश शिकवायचे, पुण्यात शिकले होते, त्यांनी ती सगळी पुस्तके विकत घेतली होती... 

पण आमच्या कडे ती ठेवायला नीट जागा नव्हती, त्यामुळे ती सगळी आमच्या वरच्या खोलीच्या माळ्यावर  पडली होती... 

आम्ही मोठे होत गेलो, आमचे हात जास्त वळवळू लागले तशी त्यातील अनेक खाली आली, त्यातील बहुतेक पेपरबॅक होती, अगदी classics सुद्धा.... 

आम्ही मराठी शाळेतील मुले होतो, आम्हाला इंग्लिश अत्यंत वाईट पद्धतीने शिकवले जात असे, त्यामुळे त्या भाषेतील पुस्तके वाचावीशी वाटायची नाहीत, पण पुढे सुट्टीत दुपारी येणाऱ्या boredom ला उपाय (आम्ही कोणत्याही मोठया सुट्टीत नातेवाईकांकडे जात नसू) म्हणून ती पुस्तके वाचायला सुरवात झाली .... 

माझ्या वडलांनी पहिल्यांदाच जाहीर केले: पुस्तके जरूर आणि कोणतीही  वाचा, पण मला एकाही शब्दाचा अर्थ विचारायचा नाही ... पुस्तक कळत नसले तरी वाचत जायचे....

Erich Maria Remarque सारख्या लेखकाची सगळी पुस्तके आम्ही हळूहळू वाचून काढली! सर्व पेपरबॅक मध्ये होती....

बांगलादेश स्वातंत्र्याच्या युद्धाच्या काळात मी ११ वर्षांचा होतो पण महाराष्ट्र टाइम्स मध्ये येणारा युद्धाबद्दलचा  शब्द न शब्द मी वाचत होतो, बहुतेक वेळी आनंद साजरा करत होतो तर एखाद्या वेळी दुःख ... 

त्यावेळी ना विडिओ गेम्स होते , ना टीव्ही , खेळण्यातलेचांगले  विमान सुद्धा  एखादेच हाती लागले असेल पण मी प्रेम करत होतो मिग २१वर ... 

आयुष्यात योगायोग म्हणजे मिग चालवलेले महावीरचक्र विजेते रमेश बेनेगल मला १९९२ साली त्यांच्या  घरी भेटले ...त्यांचा मुलगा माझा आसाम मध्ये मित्र झाला होता  ... 

Wing Commander Bhupendra Kumar Bishnoi (picture below) led his MiG-21 formation in the decisive attack on the Pakistani airbase at Tezgaon on December 6, 1971, and also led the famous Govt. House strike at Dhaka on December 14, 1971, a crucial blow that led to Bangladesh's liberation. Bishnoi's actions, and those of his squadron, earned the "Runway Busters" a Battle Honour for their counter-air missions, effectively crippling the Pakistani Air Force in East Pakistan and securing air superiority for the Indian forces.  

In 2021, on the 50th anniversary of the liberation of Bangladesh, India’s then president presented his counterpart with a replica of the MiG-21, reflecting the esteem in which it was held.
