माधव जूलियन यांच्या बद्दल वाचताना एक गोष्ट लगेच लक्षात येते ती ही : जॉन टॉड (१८००-१८७३) ह्यांच्या The Student's Manual: DESIGNED, : BY SPECIFIC DIRECTIONS ,: TO AID IN : FORMING AND STRENGTHENING THE INTELLECTUAL AND MORAL CHARACTER AND HABITS: OF: THE STUDENT. ह्या १८३५ साली प्रसिद्ध झालेल्या पुस्तकाचे माधव जूलियन यांच्या जीवनातील अनन्यसाधारण महत्व.
लग्नानंतर कोल्हापूरला संसार मांडल्यावर ते त्यांच्या पत्नीला टॉड वाचायचा सल्ला देतात...आयुष्याच्या उत्तरार्धात, ज्या मैत्रिणीचा संसार दुःखी झाला आहे, आणि जी तिचे त्यांच्या बरोबरचे भूतकाळातील प्रेमाचे क्षण आठवत आहे, तिला ते 'Manual' वाचायचा सल्ला देतात, ते स्वतः आयुष्यभर नेहमी 'Manual' कडे वळत असावेत.
'Manual' नसते तर ते, त्यांचे साहित्य, त्यांची असाधारण विद्वत्ता आणि त्यांच्या आयुष्यातील काही व्यक्ती यांचे काय झाले असते असा प्रश्न मला पडला.
विकिपीडिया जॉन टॉड यांच्या बद्दल लिहिते: "... Dr. Todd was remarkably successful as a pastor, and also wielded a powerful influence as an author. He published over thirty volumes, besides many sermons and pamphlets. His most widely known book, "The Student's Manual," was first published in 1835...."
टॉड पुस्तक लिहण्यामागची त्यांची भूमिका अशी विषद करतात : "Hardly any class of men are so difficult to be reached as students, and the undertaking is hazardous; but no class of men are so open to conviction, so alive to manly principle, so susceptible of good impressions, when the effort to aid them is judicious and worthy of their attention. Whether the present attempt is a happy one, the author is not presumptuous enough to say. The highest wish of his heart would be to have its reception and success commensurate with his esteem and love for those for whose welfare he feels the strongest interest, and for whose benefit he has written..."
