पीटर फ्रँकोपॅन (Peter Frankopan) हे अलीकडील काळातील अत्यंत गाजलेले इतिहासकार आणि बेस्ट सेलींग लेखक आहेत.
ज्यावेळी त्यांना Five Books ने विचारले की तुमच्या मते इतिहासावरील सर्वोत्कृष्ट पाच पुस्तके कोणती , त्यावेळी त्यांनी पहिले पुस्तक निवडले : अँटन चेकॉव्ह यांचे 'द चेरी ऑर्चर्ड', १९०३-०४.

"...When I was 15 or 16, I found Chekhov for the first time. The
Cherry Orchard captures—more than any book that I’ve ever read—this period of
transition where the world is changing. Half of the characters are in complete
denial. Lopakhin is the great merchant whose fortunes have transformed him from
the lowest of the low to being able to buy the places where his family used to
be indentured.
And yet—despite that sense of change and the denial and
these beautiful themes—what Chekhov didn’t know when he wrote it is that
Russia’s glorious opening to the future was about to implode with war and then
revolution. It has these hopes and fears and misgivings and the end point is
that it all ended in disaster. It was a great moment in Russian history. So, as
a kind of period piece that captures Russia in the late 19th, early 20th
century, it’s the most poignant text I’ve ever read...
Literature is a way through to history and understanding the
past. It asks different kinds of questions. I think you learn much more about
Russia before the revolution by reading The Cherry Orchard than you will by
studying the tsar and his land reforms or other decisions made in St Petersburg
by the leadership. I think that’s important for historians—to not always be
thinking about some guy at the top and power..."
माझ्या मनात आले की १९व्या शतकाच्या सुरवातीपासून १९५० पर्यंत मराठीत अशी किती पुस्तके प्रकाशित झाली - फक्त तत्कालीन कथा, कादंबऱ्या, नाटके - ज्यामुळे आपल्याला त्याकाळचा इतिहास चांगला समजतो?
मला वारंवार सुचवण्यात आलेले पुस्तक म्हणजे ह ना आपट्यांचे 'मधली स्थिती', इ.स. १८८५ - ८८. ते मी अजून वाचले नाहीये.
माझ्या डोळ्यासमोर दुसरे एकही पुस्तक आलेले नाही.
इतिहासाचार्य राजवाडे हे उत्तम वाचक आणि टीकाकार होते. जसे त्यांनी १९व्या शतकातील पाश्चिमात्य, विशेषतः फ्रेंच आणि रशियन, कादंबऱ्यांचे कौतुक केले आहे तसे कौतुक त्यांनी कोणत्याही तत्कालीन मराठी कथा, कादंबरी, नाटक यांचे केल्याचे स्मरत नाही. ('कादंबरी', पृष्ठ २७७-३०६, 'राजवाडे लेखसंग्रह', १९५८/१९९२)
मी तर आता या मताचा बनलोय की एखाद्या काळाचा साक्षीदार म्हणून उत्तम साहित्य हे उत्तम (लिहला असेल तर) इतिहासापेक्षा कितीतरी सरस गोष्ट आहे.
