Ludwig Wittgenstein:
“We feel that even when all possible scientific questions
have been answered, the problems of life remain completely untouched.”
John Gray:
"The best book ever written by a philosopher on
religion is William James’s The Varieties of Religious Experience (1902).
Approaching faith in a pragmatic and empirical spirit, James – brother of the
novelist Henry James – focuses on experiences rather than beliefs. Faith is a
matter of how one lives, not a theory that can be verified or falsified. His
book was much admired by Ludwig Wittgenstein, a deeply religious person who
never subscribed to any religious belief."
"Something as ancient, as profound, as inexhaustibly
rich as religion or religions can’t really be written off as an intellectual
error by clever people. Most of these clever people are not that clever when
compared with really clever people like Wittgenstein or Saint Augustine or
Pascal — all philosophers of the past who seriously engaged the religious
perspective."
