Agreement may not emerge every single time. But some people are not happy with that. They want a fight! And I am too weak for that.

Thanks for Ghalib's interpretation. Can any one express better than him such a complex concept?Aniruddha G. You are absolutely right regarding ...Dear Aniruddha
You are absolutely right regarding reason’s limitations and science is a kind of faith. And the meaning of Ghalib’s Couplet as I understand is like this he says Iman muze roke hai (my iman my Vivek or conscience is holding me back from committing a sin or wrong act and Kufra i.e. we can say my Vasna or desire or temptation is pulling me forward to commit it or attracting me strongly.(passion). And so he says same thing in another way that Kaba ( sacred place of muslims) which is symbolic here of all goodness or Vivek is on my back (holding me from behind) and kalisa (church here symbolic of something tempting or evil as Ghalib was muslim for him Kalisa was symbolic of something tempting evil) is attracting me towards it.
So he beautifully describes the TENSION of a human soul which is getting harassed between both forces.
And honestly speaking dear Anirudhha Bhau I had no intention of DEBATE I was simply expressing my views in a friendly spirit as we generally share with our friends nothing else. This post is so rich with new thoughts for me I will have to study it again and again as it has stimulated my intellect strongly. It is a sheer joy when we encounter some new and original concept. Especially this line in your post that “scientific inquiry depends on a belief in causation that cannot survive rational analysis “ is a cause of great disturbance and stimulating my thought process extremely.
Thanks Again for such an extra ordinary beautiful post !
Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15551842662556774255noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-37823526.post-86300821677344594192013-08-28T15:14:08.727+05:302013-08-28T15:14:08.727+05:30Thanks for your feedback Deepak. I did not understand Ghalib's couplet but am sure the great man had something worthwhile to say on the subject.

I usually don't debate what I say but let me say only this: reason has limitations and people should understand it. Especially if they are our thought-leaders.

And 'science' too in the end is a kind of faith.

best,Aniruddha G. I was surprised by the views of R D Karve on religion & social sciences and his unreasonable reliance on reason. I was also surprised by “Indian followers” of John Mill and his effect on their thoughts. But I feel that REASON with all its inherent limitations, is the major TOOL available to humans. How could mankind proceed without it? REASON is like that guide who cannot take us to last station of our journey of exploration but it definitely takes us nearest possible.
Another point I feel is if we keep on challenging every fact or idea or opinion we definitely find it meaningless then how to face that emptiness that “big zero ‘. How to deal with that “big zero “.which arises after this analysis. Does not it lead to Nihilism? Then what about ACTION? What should be the right action? And how long can we avoid Action and Living?
I understand our Addiction of Reason but also do not know any substitute to it. Emotions or passions are subjective. Then should we follow path like Gandhi i.e. following our ‘inner voice’ but then I feel Hitler or Laden also follow their ‘inner voice’ while killing people?
I find REASON safer I use it to go as long as possible and when it stops helping I just simply throw my self before the MOMENT and let the moment guide me just go with flow. Still searching for an answer.
This paradox but creates sorrow in our life and anguish which we cannot escape here I feel the TENSION which generates in human’s soul when from one end our VIVEKA pulls us and from other end our VIKAR pulls us .This fight between Reason and Passion is beautifully explained by Ghalib in his beautiful Sher
Imma muze roke hai to khinche hai muze Kufra , Kaba mere Peeche hai Kalisa mere aage.
Sorry I think I could not keep the comment relevant to your post.
